Frankie Chan Reflects on Joining Pussy Galore

I always loved garage rock, from the Stooges and back to the Monks.  Me and Eric Tsang used to play skiffle in Hong Kong bars between movies and my soundtrack work.  It wasn’t electric or groin fixated enough for me.  It was just me and him scraping metal spoons up and down wash boards.  I like dirty music.

How did I hook up with Pussy Galore?  I happened across a New York music paper one day at the Golden Harvest Studios, it must’ve been left by some white guy, there was lots of them around in 1989.  There was one guy called Kevin, it might have been him.  He liked ‘Members Only’ jackets.  Gold ones.  Sammo had one, XXXL.  It had diamond studs spelling ‘Pump’.  It might have been a spelling error.  I kicked him once in the balls because he looked at me funny.  I caught him staring down at me when I was using a cubicle in the men’s room.

Anyway, I responded to the ad.  Pussy Galore were looking for a keyboard player after their last one overdosed on dub in the Caribbean.  We hooked up and we gelled well.
We were fucking sex man, connecting Iggy Pop’s cock walk with Cramp vocals and proto-psychedelia with low slung dirty guitars.  I would twist shapes with my keys that would transcend time and space, challenging the very notions of reality and monologues of thought.  Either that or it was all the pills.  It was a short tour and I was contracted to to do ‘Fun And Fury’, a lame-o comedy with some kicks.  I got to wear a wet suit in it!  I was given a return ticket to New York but they’d imploded by the time I was due back.

Shame, me and those gutter cats never got to slap sounds on vinyl.  I did re-use the keyboard notes for ‘Warrior’s Tragedy Part One’ but you can’t hear it due to some horses farting in the dub track.  Fucking Ti Lung fed them his leftover prawn curry.  Asshole.  I did connect with Napalm Death but that’s another story.
